International Appalachian Trail 2026

For my next adventure, I’m hoping to walk/hike/bike the roughly 1,500 mile IAT, which is an extension of the well-known Appalachian Trail, starting from Mt Katahdin, Maine.

As you can see from the map, this route is more of a concept than a continuous, congruous trail. I’m not sure if I’ll do all of it or some modified version. There’s a lot of road walking through most all of northern Maine, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and much of Newfoundland. For those parts, I’ve considered buying a cheap bike to use as is possible, we’ll see.

I also don’t think I’ll write daily blogs about this adventure, as I don’t know what kind of connection I’ll have and I’m also just sick of keeping up with it while on trail. I can barely manage to send out some Instagram \FB posts these days. But I’m sure I’ll keep notes and post what’s interesting later.

As a side note, I’ve been traveling around in New England for a few weeks prior to the hike, visiting some of the places I passed by in 2020 and 2021 on the Long Trail and AT. I got to see Mud Lantern, my hiking buddy from the AT. Back then, I first ran into him in Vermont at the Yellow Deli, then we hiked the last 600 miles together to Georgia (we were both southbounders). He lives near Boston and it was great to catch up with him in his native NE environment. I’m happy to report that he’s doing well and living his best life …we went skeet shooting, lol!

As for another random AT reunion, I bumped into a Trail Angel, Jinx, on the top of Mt Washington. In 2021, she provided awesome trail magic while I was hiking through Pennsylvania. This summer she was hiking a section through the Whites and we just happened to be on top the highest mountain in NE at the same time (I drove up). I couldn’t believe she recognized me after 5 years, especially since she’s been doing trail magic for AT hikers for a long time and had probably met hundreds. What a coincidence!
