It rained on and off all night, but it was mostly pretty light, the kind of rain that makes a nice sound on a tent but doesn’t cause concern for flooding. I checked my tent a few times just to be sure, but it was bone dry inside. I picked a good spot and made a good pitch. I loved hearing the rain and woke feeling so refreshed. I took a more leisurely morning, enjoying my coffee and the views from the porch. I slept so great out there. It wasn’t too cold overnight and I was well protected from any breeze. I woke to the sounds of nibbling a few times overnight. The pack rats were hard at work, slowly dismantling the house. But at least they left my stuff alone. Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, 0530-1710North Tower Mountain, mm35.5, to Hill Top House, mm 61, Elevation 3813′25.5 miles. The wind died a little overnight, or maybe I just did a good job of ignoring it. At some point, I could swear I heard a distant murmur from either a highway or a train track, maybe even a train whistle. But I have no idea where the noise could have come from because I was too far north of I-40 and even farther north of the BNSF railroad. Monday, March 3rd 2025, 0600-1730North Fenner Hills mm10 to North Tower Mountain, mm35.5, Section 7. Elevation 4600′25.5 miles. The wind howled all night, but somehow my yucca block was just enough. I was able to sleep pretty well by putting my ear plugs in. Otherwise, I would just lay awake, listening for the next guest to come blow my house in. The wind was even stronger early in the morning, with gusts up to 40 mph. It was also quite cold, only in the upper 30s when I woke. It never really warmed up all day. This Tom Petty song was playing on the gas station radio in the morning…seemed appropriate. I slept surprisingly well, considering the onslaught of noise and lights surrounding the gas station. I had to sink my earplugs really well, then cover my eyes with my buff. I woke up a few times to the sound of trucks roaring in to get gas, but otherwise the other sounds became white noise. Saturday, March 1st 2025, 0610-1400Weaver’s Well to Najah’s Hi Sahara Desert Oasis Gas Station, Fenner, I-40 mm129, End Section 6. Elevation 2080′.22 miles. My jacked-up shoulder was pretty sore in the morning. But my more pressing concern was what the alkaline water was doing to my plumbing. As happy as I was to find the water, there was a small price to pay. Yet another benefit of hiking alone is that one doesn’t have to go far from their tent to did a cathole. As in, just feet away. I thought the previous 2 days were going to be the hardest in this section, but this day had a little mishap that also made it tough, but I got through it and kept going. I started early, trying to avoid the heat through a long, low and sandy crossing of the Ward Valley. The wind picked up even more overnight, so I decided to put my tent into ‘bivy mode’ to reduce the flapping. I discovered this trick on past hikes. I just have to remove my center trekking pole, leaving everything else as is. I don’t mind having the walls collapsed on top me too much… it’s probably even extra insulation against the cold.
